To me this book felt slightly different than some other books that I have read by this author. It is not totally what I expected, however it is a enjoyable read. The writing is exceptional, myself learning a couple of new words along the way. There is plenty of explicit sex and domestic discipline. It included more classic BDSM than I usually like except that a similar amount in Her Alien Commander and some other works seems perfect.It may be the story's historical time period and setting that somehow seem not to fit with underlying themes of acceptance and forgiveness, with some of the story scenes, with POVs of certain characters, and with the rapidness in which cultural change occurs. Because of this, as a reader, I felt like I was constantly being swung back and forth between harshness in various forms on one page and an atmosphere of moral virtue on the next page.
On the other hand, there were some fantastic characters in this story, so much so, that I found myself wanting the story of Taranc and the story of Gunnar instead of Ulfric or in addition to it. Both of these other male characters were heroes. The book is neither short nor long. My preference would have been to have had a longer book with all three of these tales intertwined over a bit longer period of time.
All in all this is a very good book, just wishing to know what happened with Taranc and Brynhild after his departure and also how the relationship came about between Gunnar and Mairead and what was going on in Gunnarsholm. This author continues to be a favorite; and, this book will appeal to all those who enjoy erotic historical romance.

I enjoyed the story line a lot. I like reading about the trials and tribulations that the couple's go through. It's got tossed scenes and discipline actions as well but there is a story to be had.
Very nice story. The evolution of the relationship was fun to follow. Adult situations including an intense bondage scene
I am ill and it is hard to concentrate on a book lately. This one was so very well done that I fought through the difficulties to finish it. It was wonderful
If you like your historical romance steamy, sprinkled with spankings, then this book is for you. Strong alpha male Viking captured Celtic slave and lets the spears fly. I enjoyed it up to a point, however, I tend to like a more equal relationship outside of the bedroom.

This is the first book I've read by this author and unfortunately, it became a DNF. It's not bad. I've read much worse. I just wasn't able to really get into the story. I felt nothing for the heroine and I could see the the conflict coming. The deflowering scene was good but the rest of the story just never caught my interest to keep me reading until the end. Sorry.
This was a different kind of Viking type book. I liked it and would tell someone it is worth the time and money. It was what I feel was not very realistic for the time but if you are not one that gets tied up in the "that's just wrongs" I think you might enjoy this. I will keep a lookout on Ashe Barker books because I liked and enjoyed the way she writes her characters but on the whole I like the Fiction to be in the story around the characters/relationships and the rest sticking as close possible to the time and historical setting.
